Berwyns from Ty'n-y-fedw
Etching - edition of 16, image size 28cm x 16cm
In this two-plate etching, I have sought to capture the rhythmic beauty of the Berwyn Range. Using a striking palette of black and silver ink, the piece depicts the mountains as a series of receding waves, moving from the solid darkness of the foreground to a shimmering, metallic horizon. Ty’n-y-fedw translates roughly to "House of the Birches." Looking out from this location, the viewer is presented with a scene of absolute "tranquil solitude." The etching excludes all signs of modern life, focusing instead on the rhythmic, undulating lines of the earth itself—a "solitary place" (Erēmos) that feels outside of time. Viewed from Ty’n-y-fedw, the scene is one of profound peace and elemental strength. It is a work that celebrates the "high places" of the Welsh landscape, where the earth meets the sky in a moment of silver-lit silence.
