In this etching, I have sought to capture the "interlocking spurs" and the deep, V-shaped profile that defines Carding Mill Valley. The work focuses on the dramatic movement of light across the steep-sided slopes of the Long Mynd, where the ancient geological layers of silt and sand seem to shift under the changing weather. By utilising a combination of fine-line etching and subtle aquatint, I have aimed to translate the physical energy of this Shropshire landmark into a visual record that balances realism with a poetic, atmospheric resonance. Carding Mill Valley is a iconic landscape within The Long Mynd, a vast plateau of heathland in the Shropshire Hills. Managed by the National Trust, it is a place where the air and light are in constant flux. The valley was carved by a mountain brook, and its geography is ancient—formed by tectonic upheavals over 500 million years ago. For an artist, it offers a "paradise" of slanting light, mist-filled hollows, and a sense of scale that feels both intimate and immense.
