This version of "Carding Mill Valley" utilises the drypoint technique to create a more immediate and tactile response to the Shropshire landscape. By scratching directly into the copper plate, I am able to achieve a rich, burred line that echoes the physical textures of the Long Mynd—its gorse, scree, and weather-beaten slopes. The work focuses on the "restless energy" of the valley, where the deep shadows of the interlocking spurs meet the sudden, brilliant bursts of light that define the Welsh Marches. Carding Mill Valley is the heart of The Long Mynd, a sprawling plateau of Pre-Cambrian rock in the Shropshire Hills. This specific vantage point looks into the belly of the valley, a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for millennia. It is a place of "drizzle and cloud," where the air often feels as solid as the land itself. For me, this location represents a point of deep personal connection and a perfect stage for observing the interplay of air, light, and ancient stone.
