Kinder Scout is a moorland plateau and National Nature Reserve in the Dark Peak of Derbyshire. As the highest point in the Peak District, it is a place of dramatic weather and rugged terrain, famous for its "cloughs" (steep-sided valleys) and unique gritstone rock formations. It is a landscape that feels ancient and untamed, serving as a vital symbol for the UK's "right to roam" movement. In this etching and aquatint, I have sought to translate the physical "grit" of Kinder Scout into the language of printmaking. The heavy, dark tones of the aquatint represent the deep peat and weathered stone that characterize the plateau, while the etched lines provide the structural detail of the moorland's surface. The composition focuses on the vastness of the plateau, where the horizon often dissolves into the mist. I wanted to capture the silence of the Dark Peak—a silence that is heavy with history and elemental power. This work is an invitation to experience the solitude of the high moors, where the boundary between the solid earth and the shifting sky is constantly being redefined by the elements.
