Loch Enoch (“Icy Loch”) is located approximately 12 miles north of the town of Newton-Stewart, in the Dumfries and Galloway region of south-west Scotland. It occupies a wild, upland setting in the heart of the Galloway Hills, where it is surrounded on all sides by high ground. To the west of the loch lies Merrick. Robert the Bruce and his army of guerrilla fighters took refuge in the Galloway Hills during the 14th century wars of independence and it seems that they may have camped either beside or near Loch Enoch. Bruce’s Stone is situated a few miles south-west on Loch Trool
