Watercolour and mixed media on paper, 38×28cm, framed with anti-reflective UltraVue UV70 glass and an ivory black frame.
This work was captured from the Col de l'Aulp, a high mountain pass in the Haute-Savoie region of France that offers a staggering view of the peaks surrounding Lake Annecy. In this painting, I wanted to move away from the "postcard" sunshine often associated with the Alps and instead focus on the raw, unpredictable drama of mountain weather. By layering watercolor with dry media, I've illustrated the sheer "curtains" of rain that sweep across the valley, momentarily veiling the massive limestone faces of the mountains. It is a study of scale and power, where the permanence of the rock meets the fleeting intensity of a mountain storm.
