This work was drawn from the breathtaking landscape of Lake Annecy in the French Haute-Savoie. While the visual inspiration is rooted in the alpine clarity of the mountains and the lake's famous deep blue waters, the soul of the piece is found in the Genesis creation narrative. The title refers to the second day of creation, when God separated the "waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse." In this painting, I have used the natural horizon of the Annecy landscape to explore this divine architecture. The arcing, light-filled textures in the sky represent the celestial "waters above," mirroring the depth and mystery of the lake below. It is a celebration of the harmony and order established at the beginning of time, found within the specific, sun-drenched beauty of the Alps.
